Novel Coronavirus (COVID19): MYTH BUSTERS by the World Health Organization (WHO)

WHO has delcared Coronavirus situation as pandemic now with 142320 confirmed cases,5388 loss of precious lives affecting 129 countries so far.As Coronavirus is spreading throughout the world, there are several myths also popping up across.

Below are the few myth busters from WHO (World Health Organization):

  •    There is no reason to believe that cold weather can kill the new coronavirus or other diseases.
  •    Taking a hot bath will not prevent you from catching COVID-19. Your normal body temperature remains around 36.5°C to 37°C, regardless of the temperature of your bath or shower.
  •   The new coronavirus cannot be transmitted through goods manufactured in China or any country reporting COVID-19 cases. If you think a surface may be contaminated, use a disinfectant to clean it. After touching it, clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.
  •    To date there has been no information nor evidence to suggest that the new coronavirus could be transmitted by mosquitoes.
  •     Hand dryers are not effective in killing the 2019-nCoV.
  •    UV lamps should not be used to sterilize hands or other areas of skin as UV radiation can cause skin irritation.
  •     Thermal scanners are only effective in detecting people who have developed a fever (i.e. have a higher than normal body temperature) because of infection with the new coronavirus.

  •
  •    Spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body will not kill viruses that have already entered your body.
  •     At present, there is no evidence that companion animals/pets such as dogs or cats can be infected with the new coronavirus.
  •    Vaccines against pneumonia, such as pneumococcal vaccine and  Haemophilus influenza type B (Hib) vaccine, do not provide protection against the new coronavirus.
  •     There is no evidence that regularly rinsing the nose with saline has protected people from infection with the new coronavirus.
  •   Garlic is a healthy food that may have some antimicrobial properties. However, there is no evidence from the current outbreak that eating garlic has protected people from the new coronavirus.
  •    People of all ages can be infected by the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease) appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.

  •    No, antibiotics do not work against viruses, only bacteria. The new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a virus and, therefore, antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment.
  •    To date, there is no specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Novel Coronavirus (COVID19): Source,Spread,Symptoms,Healthy Habits & a Movie Contagion (2011)

Novel Coronavirus (COVID19) is spreading all around the world. As of today’s, reports, the global number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 has surpassed 100 000 and more than 3000 precious human lives lost due to this. The virus has been named “SARS-CoV-2” and the disease it causes has been named “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”). Till date, it has affected around 90 countries worldwide. On January 30, 2020, the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a “public health emergency of international concern. The epicenter of this spread is believed to be Wuhan, Hubei province, China. Vaccine and medications for this disease are yet to be invented though research is in full swing. It might take some more time. Till then precaution is the best bet against this disease.

Source and Spread of the Virus:
  • Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in people and many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats.
  • The SARS-CoV-2 virus is a beta coronavirus, like MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV. All three of these viruses have their origins in bats.
  • The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
  • It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
China, Iran, Italy, Japan and South Korea are the most affected nations as of now. In India, so far, we are lucky that we don’t have situation of severe community spread. Community spread means some people have been infected and it is not known how or where they became exposed.  The Government of India is trying their level best in containing this spread to the minimum. As a citizen, it’s very important that we shouldn’t be panic in this situation and rather help each other by taking the best possible precautions in our day to day lives.

Symptoms:

Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure.

Healthy Habits to Help Prevent Coronavirus:
  • Clean your hands with soaps/hand wash or hand sanitizers (having     alcohol >60%).
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep     your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  • If possible, stay home from workplace, school and crowded places when    you are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty    of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
  • You may also avoid public transportation or else travel with full safety      measures in place like wearing facemasks  etc.
What to do if you are feeling sick or having doubts about health condition?
  • Immediately take proper medical care and you may also contact GOI 24*7 helpline number for further guidance by calling on +91- 11- 23978046 or by emailing to ncov2019@gmail.com.
  • Stay home and avoid public areas, crowded places.
  • You should restrict contact with pets and other animals also while you are sick with COVID-19.
  • Patients with confirmed COVID-19 should remain under home isolation precautions until the risk of secondary transmission to others is thought to be low. Please follow advice from your healthcare providers.

CORONAVIRUS(2019) & MOVIE CONTAGION(2011) SIMILARITY:

There could be a mere coincidence that a science fiction movie titled “Contagion” released in 2011 starring Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Lawrence Fishburne and others is having the very similar kind of situation which the world is currently experiencing due to Coronavirus. It's having very striking similarities of events. You may watch this movie on Amazon prime or on YouTube. You will be totally surprised for sure!

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign) : "Hygiene is More Important than Political Independence" !!

Clean India  campaign  can trace back its initiatives  long back  to the period of Mahatma Gandhi  and he protracted  the importance  of hygiene India with embarking the words  "hygiene is more important  than  political independence"  embrace  a notion  that the attempts to clean the surroundings  and his mother land have wide significance  just like the intense coupling to protect  common imperatives of socio-cultural contexts.

The views of cleaning  India  campaign  implies the vision  on inclusive growth, in which,  each and every  one must be blessed  with  the impacts of economic  growth and each particles of marginalized  sector should increase  their living  conditions by ensuring  minimum  social  as well as economic  justice .   Thus this   initiative  have a true blend with it that it will emanate  sanitation in which, one of the basic  principles  of  health  conditions  and healthy surrounding conditions shall be assured with sparking the moments of inclusiveness with proclaiming  a fact that,  bringing  social  inclusiveness is not only the function  of the state  alone but even a single  person  can contribute  to it directly.

Modi's initiative to bring Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan bounced that the government will  check  measures  to build  toilets and provide sanitation  facilities  throughout the country with proclaiming  that  it will be implemented  by 2019 and saying  that  every household  in India will have a toilet. A report planked by the UN that about 60% of Indian population practice open defecation, it can bring deadly disease like Cholera. And India is the country holding top most rank in open defecation and it can be linked with the problems of women regarding sexual assault   and rape.

Is there any link between poor sanitation system and economic disparities in the country?

Obviously  the answer is yes because  India is a country  with one of the strongest economic  edges and the total  economic  straddles  are concentrated  on the hands of few and thus the majority  Indian  population  can't  even  imagine about  the basic  principles of health care as well as social inclusiveness. Thus it is necessary to implement a system in which, the gap between the poor and the rich should be narrowed and so that it can bring inclusiveness in the social order. Bringing all such stances directly will be impossible due to vast size and large population, the situations for such reforms in economic straddles shall be implemented. When the principle of inclusiveness is considered, it will be just one among the hurdles.

Through emanating such saga of cleaning India property, we can use the funds moved for health sector for some other purposes. Through grabbing such  measures, tourist  sector can be achieved  with better edges because, the poor conditions of our public places shall be changed and better clean environmental conditions can pull   tourists  here  more  and more. As a report grabbed that the Ganga is unsafe for bathing because of high level of fecal coliform bacteria which costs more than 120 times of the permitted level emanate the seriousness of that.

The activities  which will  be grabbed  with this campaign  covering about 4041 towns and the event  held officially  at Delhi , the prime minister started  the mission and invited  famous  personalities  for the ever biggest  cleaning  drive from the government  of India and the selected  personalities  will have to select  others for the event ,  it will work like a tree. The president  of India asked  every  Indian  to spend  100 hours  annually .It  will be expected  to spent 10 billion  US dollars  for this mission and  students  and government employees  will be the part of it.

The Bal Swachhata Mission was launched  by the  minister  of women  and child  development and it is itself the part of the cleaning India campaign  and in the proclamation   event she made it obvious  that  the children  can do more with cleaning initiatives . Through embracing such saga through children, we can make good citizens for the coming days and they can clean their schools and the premises around them. The  ways  spinning regarding  the  children  have special  significance  that  the children  are the  path founders of coming  years and sanitation  process can be well traced with proper training  among them from small  classes and such  programs  can  bring awareness  among children  and  is necessary  for the coming  years for achieving  our goals.

The Bal Swachhata Mission will comprise of the following elements.

1.  Clean Anganvadis.
2.  Clean surroundings.
3.  Clean self.
4.  Clean drinking water.
5.  Clean toilets.

In that function, the minister said that the ways of sanitation will be grabbed by the children informally through games, puzzles etc.

The advantages of bringing clean India to the future generations are many. Through emanating the basics of sanitation, the basics of inclusiveness shall be prompted. Inclusiveness  refer the minimum requirements  of the citizens  like basic  amenities, which is  necessary  to build  himself  to a well-stocked civilians . Thus sanitation  facilities  can be traced  as the part of social  inclusiveness  through  which,  the government  can assure  the minimum  guarantee  regarding  their health   conditions. Social inclusiveness  shall  be  implemented  with bringing  social  justice and it is possible only  by implementing  a system  in which,  the gap between  poor and rich  should  be narrowed and to provide  directly  all the measures  of  such  inclusiveness  is impracticable  and actually  we need an arena in which,  the growth  of the economic  straddles should  be the part of inclusiveness  directly. Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan is one of the ways to achieve minimum assurance in health conditions.

How much important and useful is the flagship program “Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan” of Indian government?

How each and every citizen of India can contribute in cleaning India?

Is there any link between poor sanitation system and economic disparities in the country?  How?

India and Women Sterilization : Pathetic Condition of Government Medical Set-Up !!

Sumati Devi knew before she arrived at the grimy government clinic in northern India that she would be paid to be sterilized.
She didn't know that she would lie on an operating table with bloody sheets, that the scalpel used to open her up would be stained with rust or that she was supposed to first get counseling on other birth-control methods before giving consent to have her fallopian tubes cut and tied.

The main reason Devi had agreed to be sterilized at all was because the $10 she received -- equivalent to about a week’s wages for a poor family -- would help feed her three children.

“I did it out of desperation,” said Devi, 25, as she lay on the concrete floor recuperating at the clinic in the state of Bihar. “We’re so poor, we need the money. Health officials came to our home. They told us it would be best.”

Relatives mourning death of a relative
The incident cited in this Bloomberg article (published in June 2013) is just one horrific instance of what generally is a government sponsored program to lure economically backward Indians – mainly females, towards surgical sterilization. This trend exists despite global agreement on preferring modern and non-surgical methods of promoting demography and population control.

Last week, 12 women died and over 50 have been hospitalized with over 25 reported to be critical following surgery for laparoscopic tubectomy at a government-run camp in the Bilaspur district of Chattisgarh. Four health officials have been suspended and the Director of Health Services has been transferred. Incoming reports suggest a single doctor with his staff performed 83 operations in 5 hours!  Please note that Tubectomy is a full surgical procedure where the belly is cut open. It takes about 1.5 hours to sterilize the equipment after each procedure. The equipment used in this particular case was rusted even before first woman was operated upon on that day.
All of the 83 surgeries performed that day resulted into varying degrees of infections.

Under established guidelines, a doctor can’t perform more than 10 tubectomy surgeries in one day. Reportedly Dr R. K. Gupta performed 83. This clear breach of law was then topped by distributing rat poison infested anti-biotics to camped women.

Sterilization Camps are often under resourced

Media lapped up this story since the number of deaths were ‘unusual’. Deaths of one off patients while undergoing tubectomy procedure has never raised any enquiring eyebrows in our country. Message is simple, even if stark in its apathy – as long as you are able to meet the target numbers; one or two deaths here and there shouldn’t bother us. These sterilization programs are often driven top-down where doctors are under pressure to meet the target number of surgeries. So even this incident involving 83 women will find itself unable to start any grass root change and which can bring a paradigm shift in how women make informed choice about their lives and health. A shift that India has already claimed to have achieved back in 2012 by the way, on a global forum none the less.

Instances of such deaths caused by the callousness brought upon unsuspecting rural households – women to be more precise, have been aptly termed as medical homicide by Dr. Binayak Sen. But this will be one of the rare types of homicides which is state approved.

R K Gupta, who performed the fated surgeries, has been summarily dismissed from the job. He was earlier awarded by state government on 26th January this year for performing record 50,000 tubectomies so far.

The antibiotics Ciprocin that were handed out to women attending sterilization camp were found to contain chemicals used for rat poison. The state government said it had seized 200,000 tablets of ‘Ciprocin 500’ and over 4 million other tablets manufactured by Mahawar Pharma. Let’s put that into perspective. There were 2 lacs tablets containing rat poison which were ‘already manufactured’ and ready to go to the market. This was medical holocaust in making. We don’t know how many other such shady pharma companies are manufacturing life-threatening medicines in the name of generic and affordable drugs.

India-and-World--Women-Sterilization-Population-Control

The drug manufacturing company which is in the eye of storm, Mahawar Pharmacuticals, was banned by state government 2 years ago for selling ‘duplicate generic drugs’. It has a factory in a residential area of Raipur which doesn’t even bear a signboard. Yet the government continued to buy medicines from it.

It is easier to get lost in a debate of fixing personal accountability. But the issue at hand has much larger contours and firm tentacles in the corridors of power.

Women go under scalpel in torrid conditions in shockingly under resourced hospitals where surgeries are often performed by rogue practitioners. These practitioners see each patient as another step toward meeting the target prescribed by higher authorities. Root of this practice could be found in a 1952 announcement that was seen as an effective tool to ward off hunger related misery in India. It found further heft and became more overt during Indira era of 1970, when press was subjugated and constitution briefly suspended. ‘Forced’ surgeries might have waned in the decades since, but a factor of coercion is still present in almost all rural parts of the country. Women from poor households are lured for a paltry sum of INR 1400 – barely enough to support their families for a week, and are herded into shamble of a facility called hospital where they are operated in unsafe conditions in the name of population control.

India-Fertility-Rates-Of-Indian-States-Population-Control
Pic courtesy : thebreakthrough.org
A glowing irony then, is the fact that, despite such inhumane and coercive initiatives pursued by almost all governments since freedom, India has missed every target it set for population control. India will eclipse China by 2021 in population with the current rate.

So this method solves no one’s problems except for those looking to meet the ‘target’ numbers.

India sterilizes more woman surgically than any other country in the world - accounting for over 37% total such surgeries performed last year globally. Of 5 million sterilizations performed last year, 96% were performed on Women. Only 4% of total surgeries were performed on men.  This despite the fact that surgeries on men is relatively safer to perform.

Are even Indian medical practices sexist?

As an attempt to project a global image which is progressive and modern – India has boasted the paradigm shift in the way medical infrastructure has been revamped to cater remotest corners of the country. Infrastructure has indeed improved in past decades, but the medical services that are supposed to use this infrastructure to take the medical care to last mile have simply been stranded. Lack of any long term planning has ensured that women are not educated about other choices for birth control which is much safer compared to surgical procedure. Educating women and ensuring a constant flow of birth control pills and devices through state managed public distribution system has been deemed ‘expensive’ way of ensuring population control and so we have opted for cheaper and easier option of performing sterilization – Tubectomy.

These camps could be molded into the harbinger of medical portal – taking awareness and medical facilities to the door step of poorest of families. But in reality the doctors at these camps are mostly constrained by resources and are assigned untenable and unethical targets. Camps themselves are filled beyond capacity and often surgeries are performed while women lay in a queue on floor – separated by no more than an arm’s length. Surgical equipment are rusted and never cleaned up between two surgeries. Medicines are bought from dealers and manufacturers who hardly meet any regulatory standard for safety.

So some of the pertinent questions for the state and union functionaries are looming large. Will they choose to see and act on these or will the questions be brushed under the carpet till we start to discuss yet another birth control camp mishap in another part of the country -where victims are almost sure to have a predictable profile. A young woman who comes from the poor household, who knows nothing better than risking her life for a remuneration that will support her family for a few days. And who hasn’t been informed about the alternate choices of birth control by medical staff that doesn’t have anything apart from rust induced surgical equipment waiting for her.

What is your view on medical facilities in government hospitals throughout the country? How it can be improved effectively?

Is sterilization is the best way for population control? What are your suggestions?

What do you think about prevailing imbalance in male sterilization vs. female sterilization?
